They say the days are long but the years are short—and just like that, my baby turned one. This wasn’t just a birthday. It was a celebration of the most beautiful, emotional, transformative year of my life. And yes, we went big. Because if you can’t be a little extra for your firstborn’s first birthday, when can you?
From those first bleary-eyed cuddles to watching him crawl across the floor with absolute determination, this year has been one of deep love, unexpected strength, and so many milestones. West is pure magic—cheeky, observant, joyful, and full of personality.
This first birthday wasn’t just about celebrating him. It was about honouring everything we’ve been through together as a family. So I wanted a day that felt meaningful, memorable—and of course, a little luxe.
The theme? West’s Wild One—a safari-inspired birthday bash, hosted indoors with all the warmth and style of a Luxury Mummy event. There were balloons everywhere in tonal creams, beiges and golds, wild greenery tucked into corners, and a life-sized giraffe who stood proudly in the dining room like a guest of honour.
The cake? A two-tiered (like Keir Starmer), hand-decorated beauty—all safari animals, edible gold, and intricate leaves. It had such serious stature and presence. It was almost too perfect to slice into… almost.
Everything was curated to feel polished but personal—chic without being try-hard, fun without being chaotic.
It was cold outside, but inside our home it felt warm and full of love. I wore a safari-inspired shirt to match my little man’s baby explorer outfit, and we welcomed our closest circle—just family and a few dear friends. There were only two other toddlers invited, which kept the energy calm and joyful.
There were Champagne flutes in one room, toys on the floor in another, and that magical hum of people who adore your child nearly as much as you do. West was mesmerised—staring at the giraffe, reaching for balloons, and clapping with delight when everyone sang to him.
He devoured his cake, obviously.
At one point I looked around—West bouncing on my hip, people laughing, the soft winter light spilling in through the windows—and I just felt that wave of deep, quiet gratitude. For my husband. For our family. For this wild, wonderful baby who changed everything.
It was a perfect day. Thoughtful, funny, beautiful—and exactly what we wanted to mark one whole year of loving West.
To any mums planning a first birthday: lean in. Make it stylish, make it sentimental, and above all, make it yours. Whether you have two guests or twenty, balloons or just biscuits—do it with love. And don’t be afraid to get a giraffe.
