Flying Emirates

First Class With West

Suite 1E, Caviar, and a Baby Who Slept the Entire Flight

There are moments in motherhood where you surprise even yourself. One of mine? Flying Emirates First Class solo with my baby—and somehow making it look (and feel) like a dream.

West and I had just finished a magical few days in Dubai—a four-bedroom apartment inside a hotel, dinners at Zuma, and just the right amount of indulgence at Dubai Mall. But with hubby flying elsewhere for business, I brought West home alone.

Let’s just say—I’ve had far worse challenges.

Boarding Like a Queen (and Her Cub)

Emirates First Class

From the moment we arrived at Dubai International, it was seamless. Emirates First Class isn’t just a flight—it’s an experience. While many were rushing and juggling, we were swept through private check-in, and soon lounging in what can only be described as a luxury apartment in the sky.

We enjoyed private dining in the First Class Lounge, and even made time for West to play in the children’s area—because, yes, even the tiniest traveller deserves a moment to let off steam before Mummy switches into champagne mode.

The Suite Life

We were seated in Suite 1E, and to my delight, Suite 1F next to us was left unoccupied. The Emirates team—absolute angels—offered to combine the two suites, giving us a wonderfully spacious setup. West was completely content, strapped in comfortably and asleep for most of the flight.

Meanwhile, I reclined with a glass(or two) of Dom Pérignon, enjoyed caviar service at 38,000 feet, and had a rare moment of peace—still in full glam, of course.

To my right in 1A sat the most elegant Australian woman—a mother herself—who was flying to England for a wedding. She kindly offered to hold and play with West while I ate, letting me enjoy my meal like a human being rather than a contortionist. The gentleman in 1K leaned over with a kind smile and said, “Don’t worry if the baby cries. I’m a dad too—we’ve all been there.” I could’ve hugged him.

Even more special? One of the flight attendants was a Māori woman from New Zealand. We spoke about home, about motherhood, and I felt completely held in that moment—emotionally and literally, thousands of feet in the sky.

Luxury in the Sky (With a Baby)

You might think First Class and babies don’t mix, but actually—they do when the environment is designed for ease and grace. The cabin was quiet, the crew attentive, and everything flowed. From meals to nappy changes, it all felt handled. I wasn’t flustered. I wasn’t judged. I was just… calm.

And West felt that too. He was soothed, happy, and loved staring out at the clouds between naps and snack time.

Flying solo as a mother doesn’t have to be messy. Sometimes, it can feel like magic.

And sometimes, there’s Dom Pérignon involved.
